Definitions:

1) reproduce: to form off springs similar to the parents.
2)development: the changes that occur as living things grow.
3)consumer: are living thing that eat, or consume, other living things.
4)producer: are living things that make, or produce, their own food.
5)cellular respiration: is the process by wich food is broken down and energy is released.
6)cell: the basic unit of all living things.
7) adaptation: a trait that makes a living thing better able to survive.
8) cell membrane: gives the cell shape and holds the cytoplasm.
9) nucleus: the part of the cell that controls most of the cell activities.
10) nuclear membrane: the structure that surrounds the nucleus and separates it from the rest of the cell.
11) nucleolus: the cell part that helps make the ribosome.
12) chromosome: are cell parts with information that determines what traits living things will have.
13) cytoplasm: the clear, jellylike material between the cell membrane and the nucleus and makes up most of the cell.
14) ribosome: cell part where proteins are made.
15) mitochondria: cell part that that produces energy from food that has been digested.
16)vacuole: is a liquid- filled space that stores food, water, and minerals.
17) centrioles: are cell parts that help with cell reproduction.
18) chloroplast: are the cell part that contains chlorophyll that traps energy from the sun.
19) cell wall: is a thick outer covering outside the cell membrane.
20) diffusion: the movement of a substance form where is the large amount of it to where is the small amount.
21) osmosis: movement of water across cell membrane.
22) tissue: a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a special job.
23)organ: a group of tissues that work together to do a work.

Vocabulary #1 (The study of life)

Definitions:

  1. biology: the scientific study of living and nonliving organism.
  2. light microscope:  microscope consisting of an optical instrument that magnifies the image of an object.
  3. stereomicroscope: an optical microscope fitted with two sets of lenses, each positioned to view an object .from a slightly different angle. The result is a three-dimensional image.

  8. Celsius: denocating a scale of temperature.
  9. sientific method: series of steps used by scientists.
  10. hypothesis: a statement that can be tested.
  11. experiment: testing an hypothesis using a series of steps with controlled conditions.
  12. variable:  something that causes the changes observed in an experiment.
  13. control: a standard for comparing results.
  14. data: recorded facts or measurements from an experiment.
  15. theory: a hypothesis that has been tested again and again by many scientists, with similar results each time.
